In Thread Sketches and the Torn Series, I transform hand-dyed fabric through machine stitching, tearing, surface manipulation and layering to reference the physical process of healing.
Adding a layer of fabric and manipulating it to open up to a thread sketch beneath, the Torn work takes on a deeper depth and texture. Stitch lines from the under-layer flow over the torn layer, softening the harshness of the raw edges as happens when damage is healed and hope is restored.
